As part of its 2024 cultural season, the Château de La Roche-Guyon is offering a study day on the theme of “Gardens and landscapes between war and peace”. Among the themes covered: history of landscapes and gardens in relation to wars and power, stories of non-violent struggles around gardens or farmland, naturalist visit to observe the "balances of power" between living beings in the vegetable garden... As part of the theme of the 2024 cultural season "War and Peace", the Château de La Roche-Guyon is offering the study day "Gardens and landscapes between war and peace" which will explore History and the present to glimpse the relationships that humans have with their environment in times of war and the inscription in the landscape of the memory of past events in times of peace, but also the capacity and healing force of the destruction that nature possesses after devastating conflicts... Based on the data offered by the environment (geology, hydro-geography, topography, weather conditions or vegetation, etc.), the territory shaped by humans, and the resulting landscapes, reveal our ways of being on the planet: sheltering, moving around, feeding ourselves, exploiting, having fun, creating, etc., but also waging war. If each garden is a reflection of its time – from the first food plots to the sumptuous castle estates, including modest gardens or public parks – it is also always the result of the appropriation of a piece of land. It is often this relationship to property that, when coveted, becomes the source of struggles and wars to defend or seize spaces and resources. The territory maintains intimate and reciprocal relationships with war and peace. The Art of War, the Art of Gardens, the celebration of peace are also marked by mutual exchanges. Plants, which preceded animal life, have always accompanied us to feed us, shelter us, care for us, dress us, mobilize us… If they can be part of the resources coveted by humans and be the cause of conflicts, they sometimes have a power of reconciliation and pacification. Although they are the scene of multiple life-and-death struggles between plant and animal species, gardens and landscapes generally give us, in the end, an impression of calm and serenity. Registration required. Paid buffet at lunchtime (optional), by reservation before Tuesday, September 17.
