Immerse yourself in the refined world of the fan through five lectures blending history, craftsmanship, and heritage: - A conversation about Dieppe ivory carvers from the 17th century to the present day, by Pascal Lagadec. The city of Dieppe was a major center for ivory art thanks to its significant maritime trade and attracted several hundred ivory carvers, as well as sculptors, turners, tablet makers, and workers in bone, horn, mother-of-pearl, and other materials. - The use of pigments and gold in fan leaves, or the role of illuminators in fan making, by Jonathan Govindama and Franck Monnier. The creation of a fan involves the skills of several artists and craftspeople. The illuminator made an often overlooked contribution. The aim of this presentation is to rediscover, through archives and concrete examples, the illuminator's hand as it adapted to the constraints of the fan. - Lace Fans and Needlework in the 19th Century, by Edwige Renaudin. For 20 years, Edwige has specialized in tatting, an ancient lacemaking technique of which she is one of the few remaining practitioners in France. She studies its history, publishes articles, and organizes exhibitions to showcase this art. She has received numerous international awards, and some of her pieces have been exhibited at the Fan Museum in Paris and the Fan Museum in London. She is the author of a reference work, Tatting with Shuttles. - The Painters of the Picture: A Tribute to Ernest Kees, by Anne Moulinier-Krebs. In 1894, the employees of the Kees firm decided to present their "boss" with a gift upon his retirement: a painting in the shape of a fan leaf, on which each member created a vignette painted according to their specialty. The presentation highlights the unique relationships between the artists who worked for the Kees firm. — The conservation and restoration of fans, the example of mechanism fans, by Yolaine Voltz. The lecture will address the general principles of fan restoration, then preventive conservation, presenting accessible and simple best practices for collectors, with the display of some material samples.
